Van Montgomery graduated from Texas Tech University with a Biochemistry degree. During college she had worked as a research assistant at TTU Health Sciences Center. Before starting her family, she taught high school science for several years at LBJ Science Academy in Austin and was awarded the Rising Star Teaching Award. She is married to her husband of 17 years, and they have two teenage sons. She currently homeschools her children, while actively volunteering at the Community Storehouse Food Pantry and Union Gospel Mission. Her philosophy on teaching is to inspire her students to be creative, to strive for excellence, and to become lifelong learners.
