The concept of a group is simple: families with similar philosophies and educational goals bring their children together for a group learning experience. There are new and fresh perspectives introduced, and discussion is developed and honed. Even better, fun in learning is integrated in a way that your regular homeschool programs may not be able to provide. The group concept allows for enrichment through education on topics that may fall outside the home curriculum, offering the opportunity for more growth.
In most situations, homeschool groups are presented as an addendum to, rather than a core component of, a homeschool curriculum. Groups may meet as frequently as once a week, but it is uncommon for them to meet every day.

When you create your program, the first thing you need to consider is how much your child likes group interaction. If it is the highlight of his or her educational experience, make certain that he or she can meet with other students more frequently. But if he or she is simply fond of it, rather than attached, you may choose to arrange meetups less often. However you decide to work it into your homeschool programs, your child will no doubt appreciate at least an occasional break from the in-home routine. For exceptionally shy children, the group concept can be a way to help them overcome social fears in their own time, dictated by parental scheduling and administering of the group meetings.
Here are some interesting activities that may help make your group meeting time more fun. Many of them can be combined with lessons that then involve field trips to drive home a particular point:
- Visits to area museums
- Horseback riding
- Hiking
- Nature walks
- Classic novel studies
Of course, not all of those activities will be appropriate for all homeschool groups. You should work with the other parents in your particular group to determine the absolute best solution together; ensuring that everyone understands what is happening and agrees with the plan.
