Sally is very unhappy about staying on her aunt and uncle's farm. To cheer her up, Sally's aunt makes a gingerbread cookie, which leaps out of the oven and takes her on an adventure to see travelling players perform Aesop's "The City Mouse and the Country Mouse". Along the way, they meet a karate-kicking donkey with a scrambled vocabulary, a fashionable skunk with a nose for fragrances, and a sly fox who tries to put the bite on them.
