Algebra 1 focuses on the structure of the real number system, using letters and numbers to show relations between quantities. We will review the rules and basics of arithmetic, and incorporate the use of a calculator in computing. Linear, quadratic, and systems of equations, and problem solving will also be investigated. Other topics that will be covered include negative numbers, polynomials, factoring, inequalities, statistics, irrational numbers and radicals, and graphing.
The main reason for learning math skills is to help us use math to solve everyday problems. Therefore, as well as basic math problems, this class will teach problem solving and application of learned skills to real-life situations. Homework will include multiple worksheets covering the weekly lessons and should take two to three hours per week. There will be chapter tests that will be open book, take-home tests.
Required Materials:
AGS Algebra textbook (rented from the Center)
Graph paper/notebook paper

A calculator (A basic calculator is fine, as long as it has a square root symbol. But if you're buying a new one, go ahead and buy a scientific calculator, as this will be required for many future high school courses.)
