Exploring America Part 2, Late 1800’s to Present, taught by Beth Roberts, will discuss the economic
development, social issues and political landscape of America starting with the Gilded Age and the Rise
of Industrial Power. Students will discuss their ethnic heritage and how it is related to the immigration surge from Europe that created ethnic diversity in America. Students will engage in group activities examining how the limited government intervention created debilitating consequences in the future in America that lead to War, devastation,
and later reform.
Activities and Homework Assignments:
A group discussion concerning the difference between poverty and wide-spread unemployment and
extreme poverty.
Students will bring something antique or opulent to class, and describe the practical reasons for the
object, as well as the materialistic, social influence behind it.
Create a new industrial invention using coal, steel production or railroads that could possibly revitalize
these dying industries and/or a genealogy report of where their past kinship came from during the
economic development of the 1800’s.
A paper discussing what monopolies are around today that need to be investigated and regulated and
the future possible consequences if not monitored.
Required:
Students must have computer access, able to research and write on historical subjects.
Students must have access to specific youtube videos to watch concerning the late 1800’s history topics
until present.
Students must have the ability to email papers to the teacher and turn in assigned homework.
Students must have Microsoft Word/MS Word for creating documents, or some kind of word-processing
program mainly for creating documents, such as handouts and student’s homework assignments.
Students must turn in assigned homework.
