Consumer Math will help your student develop the knowledge and skills they need to successfully handle their personal finances today and into the future. It is time to take the math they’ve been learning in school and apply it to real life situations that they will encounter as adults. We will start the year playing the “Game of Life.” They will get a job with a salary. They will then use that salary throughout the year as their basis for making purchasing and saving decisions as we learn about banking with checking and savings accounts; buying, insuring, and maintaining a car; creating and balancing a budget; avoiding debt; renting or buying a home; buying food and clothing; filing taxes; making investments; and giving. These real-world situations will present your students with sound, Biblical views for managing their money.
While playing the “Game of Life”, we will focus on improving basic math skills including working with decimals, fractions, and percents. We will work on both mental math while shopping and calculator math used in investments.
There will be 2-3 hours of homework a week that will include a math assignment and then some other form of learning such as watching a video, taking a survey, doing some research, completing projects, or starting family discussions.
Students should have completed Algebra 1
