Theatre is great for kids both with a love of the spotlight and those wanting to come out of their shell. Come make friends, hone your craft, and take on a role!
This class is a non-musical Theatre Production class stretched out over a full school year. This class is not a beginner's class, so it is recommended to take Theatre 101 alongside this class if your student does not have previous experience.
Each class will be spent rehearsing a full show which will incorporate set, props, costumes, lights, and sound.
There will be a full Tech Week near the end of the school year where students will be required to attend class in the evenings (typically 5:30-8:30pm, or 6:30-9:30pm, however the end time is estimated and can run later), followed by three nights of live onstage performances complete with break-a-leg roses during intermission and a curtain call.
Parents are required to volunteer for two spots during Tech and performances which include needs like Annex Mom (our dressing room chaperones), Usher, and Line Reader. Parents are also required to attend the first 30 minutes of the first class to go over important theatre information as well as sign a Contract of Commitment with your student.Â
Students are expected to be responsible for being on time, keeping up with their script, taking notes, and memorizing lines. Memorizing your lines is your homework and must be worked on every day! Parents, please make sure your student is setting aside adequate time to do so.
If your student is going to miss a class you must notify me as soon as you can via Google Classroom. Missing classes is allowed up until Tech Week, but it affects every student moreso than a regular class.
Everyone in the class will get an acting part in the show (no tech or crew), but will have to go through a closed in-class audition during the second class day, for which they will need to memorize a short monologue (around 1 minute) which you can find online or from another play/movie/etc.
Required supplies:
A prepared monologue.
Your student will get a script that they need to bring to every class.Â
They also need to bring a water bottle, a highlighter, and a pencil.Â
They need to wear clothes they can move around in, and shoes that will stay on their feet and be good for the surface of the stage. Jazz shoes are highly recommended. We also might have days where they will need to work on sets and props (around paint!).
Hair will need to be in a ponytail or otherwise out of the face.
Most costumes and props will be supplied by the Theatre department. Other things that the theatre doesn’t have will need to be supplied by the student and parents (from home, Goodwill, Amazon, etc.) which can be an extra expense. Usually this means things like a shirt, pants, or shoes. Students will be asked to take some costume pieces home and store them safely.
