Improv/Scene Study Class will be divided into 2 semesters.
Semester 1 will be improv. We will be covering the top 9 rules of improv: Teamwork and trust, make associations, yes...and, listen, relate, be honest, be in the present, tell a story, and develop relationships.
Each week they will develop new skills. These new skills will be learned by playing games that use one or more of the 9 rules of improv.
Benefits of Improv
1.Enhanced Communication Skills- One of the most significant advantages
of learning improv is improved communication skills. Improv forces
individuals to listen actively and react swiftly, honing one’s ability to convey
ideas clearly and respond to others in real time.
2. Boosted Creativity- Improv is all about thinking outside the box and
coming up with the creative solutions on the fly. This can translate into
increased innovation in both personal and professional settings.
3.Increased Confidence- Trying something new and throwing yourself into
the unknown naturally builds confidence. Improv with its supportive and
judgment-free atmosphere, encourages participants ot take risks and
embrace the possibility of failure.
4. Better Teamwork- Improv is inherently a group activity, relying on
teamwork. Participants must work together, trust one another, and build on
each others ideas.
Semester 2 will delve into Scene Study. In class, students will learn how
to take direction, build characters, and analyze scenes. They will also refine
timing, performance skills, and the ability to interact with other actors. We
will be taking what we learned in semester 1 Improv class and incorporate
it into Scene study class. Scene study allows actors to try out different genres and roles in a low-pressure environment. They will have the opportunity to perform scenes and monologues.
Benefits of Scene Study
1.Detailed Script Analysis: By focusing on individual scenes, actors learn to
meticulously dissect a script, cncover subtle character nuances and plot
details.
2.Character Development: Scene study allows actors to deeply explore the
motivations, desires and emotional complexities of a character, leading to
more nuanced performances.
3.Improvisational Skills: Practicing scene study will foster the improv skills
learned in semester 1. This will give students the ability to react
authentically to their scene partner and adapt to changing situations.
4. Scene Partner Dynamics- Working with a scene partner regularly helps
actors develop strong listening skills, build trust, and effectively respond to
each other’s choices.
This is a performance based class. At the end of each semester, they will
have an showcase what they have learned to an audience.
No textbook will be required for this class.
