Tap dancing is an exciting and expressive art form that combines rhythm, movement, and musicality. In this Level 1 class, students will learn foundational tap dance techniques, essential vocabulary, and key principles of balance and coordination. Through structured exercises, drills, and choreography, students will develop their ability to create percussive sounds with their feet while enhancing their sense of rhythm and timing. This course will also introduce students to the history of tap dance, including its origins and the contributions of legendary tap dancers. To reinforce learning, students will receive handouts and complete quizzes throughout the year.

Class Structure:
Warm-up exercises focused on rhythm, flexibility, and strengthening the feet and ankles
Breakdown of basic steps such as shuffles, flaps, cramp rolls, and time steps
Musicality drills to develop counting, syncopation, and improvisation skills
Short combinations and choreography to reinforce technique and artistry
Occasional in-class challenges to encourage creativity and confidence
Required Course Materials:
Tap dance shoes
Folder with pockets for organizing handouts
Pencil, pen, and highlighter for notes
Comfortable dance attire (leggings, joggers, t-shirts, or shorts)
Water bottle for hydration
Small hand towel for sweat management
Class Expectations & Performance Information:
A minimum of 20-30 minutes of practice at least twice a week outside of class is
required.
Costume details will be provided closer to the showcase date.Â

Students will showcase their progress in an end-of-semester showcases.
