Intro to College Level Writing

Description:

Throughout the year, students will learn how to properly incorporate MLA formatting AND MLA in-text citations and a Works Cited page. Students will learn how to write research papers, opinion papers, the ability to analyze a piece of work, and more. Students will be asked to maintain a formal tone and third-person narration throughout all of their writing assignments.

The first semester will focus on the basics of MLA style, how to analyze a piece of work, focusing on tone, symbols, character development, and more.

The second semester will focus on crafting opinion papers, cause/effect, and adding in outside sources (research) to the essay.

The final exam will be a 10-12-page research paper that must demonstrate proper MLA formatting, incorporation of sources, and thoroughly fleshed out
research.

Ideally, this class would be for upper-level high schoolers who are planning on attending college
who HAVE a good foundation in writing mechanics.

Lecture
Peer-review groups
Seminar-style discussion

Graded Activities:
Quizzes on MLA format and lecture materials
Writing journals to facilitate the writing process
Discussion board posts about assigned topics and/or class discussion about the assigned topics
Formal writing assignments over varying topics, working toward a formal research paper that will equip students to be college-ready

Class Prerequisites:  Students will be expected to write frequently, including multiple research papers. We will begin with 3-5 page papers, steadily increasing until we reach 10-15 pages at the end of the year. Before registering, students and parents need to know of the obligation and level of outside commitment.
