This challenging class will focus on spelling, pronunciation, vocabulary, comprehension, listening, grammar and punctuation, critical thinking, and writing. A variety of learning games and movement activities will be used. For most 4th and 5th grade level students, this class will cover a full year of comprehensive language arts. Homework time should be planned for 4 days per week minimum. Most students will need one hour per homework day, on average.
Students need to be able to read, write and spell at the 4th grade level or higher. This is not a remedial class.
Students will read and study literature and complete integrated lessons with the goals of helping them progress from Fall through Spring. Short dictations reinforce Bible truths, that relate to the story, and provide opportunities to improve listening, penmanship and discover possible weaknesses.
Students will be taught how to write complete sentences. All areas of writing mechanics will be taught. Students will gain experience with critical analysis questions designed to help them consider and analyze the intellectual, moral, and spiritual issues in the stories and weigh them with reference to scripture.
Novels will be selected from Progeny Press (PP), Memoria Press (MP) and Total Language Plus (TLP).
PP= study guides for literature, culturally relevant and examined from a Christian perspective.
MP= study guides for literature- students are required to think about what they read and learn to identify the important content of each story- to develop superior readers. Advanced skill of composing answers that are clear and concise.
The curriculum is to be determined, but for use during the first semester, may include the Master Books Language Arts program called Elementary Bible & English Grammar.
